People who favor fans over air conditioners like to feel a house breathe. A good window fan is a real blessing to a fan person, and doubly so if that fan can be set to blow in two directions. Double the benefits yet again if that window fan has two fan blades, each of which can be set either in or out. The Holmes HAWF3095 window fan has those quadrupled benefits, and then some. There are two 3-speed fans in the unit, each of which can be set for air intake or exhaust, or for air exchange, when one blows in and one out. In addition, there's a programmable digital thermostat and timer, so the fan can shut off automatically when nights get too chilly. And of course there is a simple on/off mode, especially good with the air exchange configuration. Air direction is set by using the sliding switches located above each fan blade. The mode button is used to turn the fan on and control the speed. The mode button also cycles through three automatic thermostat settings: Auto High, Medium, and Low. There are two additional temperature adjustment buttons to fine-tune the thermostat to a personal comfort level. In addition, a timer setting allows the fan to be programmed to turn on and off at one-hour increments over a period of as long as 16 hours. The HAWF3095 fits most windows, whether it be a casement, slider, or double-hung style. The fan can function either horizontally or vertically, and there are two 3-inch extenders that can slide on at either or both ends to help tailor the fan to most any window. Always unplug fan before cleaning. Use a soft cloth moistened with a mild, nonabrasive soap solution. Do not use gasoline, paint thinner, or benzene as a cleaning solution; also do not allow water to drip on or enter fan housing. The Holmes HAWF3095 window fan measures 25 by 13 by 5-1/2 inches. (For certain casement windows, a specifically designed bracket may be required; upon request, Holmes customer service supplies this bracket free of charge, along with installation instructions.) Buy this fan if you want something unobtrusive that will easily fit in a window, and if you like the "Acu-Temp" feature. If you live in a climate where you sometimes want a little extra cooling but don't really need AC, its ideal, especially if space is at a premium.
It puts out a good solid breeze and its nice and quiet. It is still a fan of course so I won't say its silent. Another reviewer complained about airflow, and I will say its not a heavy duty blast like you get from a big fan... but... its not a big fan, is it. High on this fan is more like medium on a big heavy fan. I like a cool bedroom and this fan has plenty of air for me. In fact I only use 3 (high) to cool the room down intially, then sleep using 1 or 2 (low, med) except on the hottest days. We have a another honkin' big fan we can move wherever we need it for the rest of the house. We love this quiet more gentle fan in our bedroom.
We replaced our old "Cool-Breeze" window fan with this one, and first off I was thrilled at how much easier it was to securely install it into the window. It is a really good design. If you choose to use them, the baffles on the sides allow the fan to fit across the whole width of the window. It was an unweildy job when I installed the old fan, but with this one it only took a minute to get it in and I didn't swear at all. The fan is nice and sleek so it easily fit into the window without interfering with the screen.
Using the "Acutemp" thermostat feature, you don't have to get up and turn off the fan and/or get a blanket in the middle of the night (the old one was so loud it kept me up so I was awake anyway). You choose your airflow level and temperature at which you want the fan to turn off, so you go to bed when its still warm and you want that fan, but then it eventually cools down (at least here in the Pacific Northwest it does, thank the goddess) and the fan turns off. Likewise, you can set it to turn on when it gets above a certain temp in the room.
Of course you can also just turn the fan on to low med or high (1, 2, or 3) without the automatic functionality.
The one thing that wasn't apparent when I ordered it, is that the darker control panel area that appears gray in the picture is actually a grayish olive green. Its fairly neutral though, kind of a pleasant sage color. Not a problem for our bedroom but I suppose some people might not like it.

When I needed a second window fan, I went looking for another Honeywell model
HW-628, like the first one I had purchased, because it was highly rated here.
Unfortunately, that model was no longer available, so I had to try something else.
I'm glad I did. The Holmes HAWF3095-U that I ended up with is better.
1) The expanding panels on the Holmes are easier to use than the Honeywell,
because they aren't the same on both sides. The left side is an optional
solid panel (use for wider windows, leave out for narrower windows) and
the right side is a slide out panel that can be adjusted to a variable size.
This turns out to be easier to install -- while one is fine tuning the position
of the right panel, the solid left side doesn't move around.
2) The temperature read out is nice to have, and lets you better
use the thermostatically controlled automatic on/off option.
3) The side of the fan toward the window screen is thinner on the Holmes,
so doesn't bump against my outside window screen or push it out of place.
4) The control buttons are a bit nicer, bigger, better feeling on the Holmes.
I now have two fans, one on each side of my upstairs apartment, in Texas where
it can get pretty warm. One fan (my old Honeywell) is blowing in, and the
other fan (my new Holmes) is blowing out. This creates a nice air flow,
through the entire apartment.
For those few days when it gets below freezing, I have hand crafted a pair of
covers, using velcro, hot stick glue gun, and a hand towel, which I can put over
the fan openings to keep out the draft. That's quite a bit easier than taking
the fans in and out would be.
So far, I have seen no signs of reliability problems with either fan, though
given that I have a green thumb for electrical gadgets, I didn't expect any
problem.

This was my first window fan. It was soo great that i decided to go on amazon and get three more. Though i did not get this fan, i ended up getting the honeywell HW-628 fan, seeing all the good reviews about it. Well lets just say i was very disappointed. The honeywell barely have any technological advance to it. Cant control anything. It was weaker than this fan, and it doesn't have sleep timer, which is a must with every electronic, when you are a lazy person.
This fan looks better and work better than the more popular honeywell, buy this and you wont regret it.

Living in a historic house where central A/C is beyond impossible we rely on the Holmes fans to make life livable. This 3rd generation product is pretty well a best of breed device. It incorporates all the best innovations of previous products including the "automatic" (thermostat) modes, easy to set controls, and readable display. Personally I thought the LCD display was a bit classier than the LED display but of course you can't read LCD in the dark so that's a win.
A prior model had a remote-control device, which would have been nice, but since it was a one-button remote and the fan only had 5-degree increments on its thermostat, that model was not very good. I would love a 3 button remote, that would have been great.
Reliability wise, you can expect about 3-5 summers out of them, less if you run them during the rain and the window is not well shielded from the elements.
The most-wished for improvement would be a way for the thermostat to control fan direction (in or out) which you currently have to manually change if you are changing from nighttime (fan in) to daytime (fan out) use.

We got this fan for our young daughter's bedroom and it works so well in there. I really like how quiet it is and that it is sealed up well so small fingers won't get injured. I have found the thermostat to be very useful. I can leave it on all night and it goes off at the temp I have it set for so my daughter does not get cold. We are now getting 2 more--one for the nursery and one for the kitchen. I would recommend it for small spaces because as the other reviewers say it is not extremely powerful. But overall a great fan for a great price.
